All praise belongs to Allah and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad. As we all know that gratitude is part of our Deen, Islam. Reciting some dua after eating means that we acknowledge His mercy and provision over us. Some people might be wondering and asking why we need to recite some after-meal dua.

Yes, we have to. We are praising Allah with some of these duas that we recite after eating. We acknowledge that every morsel that we put into our mouth is from Allah, the ability to eat is from Allah and why won’t we praise Him?

There are some times in life when we might feel a pang of pangs of hunger, maybe we don’t have money to buy food at that time and there are some who even have money but are unable to eat due to health problems, while they are hungry. Doctors are passing food into their stomachs through wires and tubes. Why won’t we show our gratitude to the one who provided food for us?

Is Saying These Dua After Eating Important?

Yes, it is important and highly recommended to say this dua after eating because it is a way of being grateful to Allah. Moreover, Allah himself says:

Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. (Q 16:114)

    Duas After Eating
The above verse shows that Allah wants us to show gratitude for His blessings upon us, so after meal dua is important. This also includes the blessings of the provision (food) He provided for us. Making these dua after eating a regular part of our routine helps build a habit of gratitude. It’s a constant reminder to appreciate Allah’s blessings and to reflect on His generosity. Our Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah is pleased with a servant who praises Him when he eats, or praises Him when he drinks.”
    Muslim 2734
    This practice of saying these days after eating can be regarded as an act of worship that strengthens our faith, earns us Allah’s pleasure, and reminds us of the blessings Allah bestowed upon us. By consistently saying these dua after eating, it will also earn us more provision from Allah. Allah says;

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’”  Surah Ibrahim (14:7)

Here are the recommended dua after eating/ after meal dua…

#1 Dua After Eating / After Meal Dua

Narrated Abu Umama: Whenever the dining sheet of the Prophet (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) was taken away (i.e., whenever he finished his meal), he used to say:

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ، وَلاَ مُوَدَّعٍ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ، رَبَّنَا

“Al-hamdu li l-lah kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiy wala muWada` wala mustaghna’anhu Rabbuna.”

All praise is to Allah, abundant, good, and blessed praise. Your favor cannot be insufficient (unceasing ), nor can be abandoned, nor can be dispensed with, O our Lord

    Sahih al-Bukhari, 5458

This after-meal dua is among the duas after eating that expresses heartfelt gratitude to Allah, acknowledging His abundant and unending blessings. By reciting this dua after eating, we are showing our dependence on Allah and gratitude for His continued provision.

#2 Dua After Eating / After Meal Dua

Sahl bin Mu`adh bin Anas narrated from his father: The Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) said: “Whoever eats food and then says:

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ ‏.‏ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

“Al-hamdulillāh, alladhī aṭ`amanī hādha wa razaqanīhi min ghairi ḥawlin minnī, wa lā quwwatin.”

‘All praise is due to Allah who fed me this and granted it as provision to me, without any effort from me nor power”

His past sins shall be forgiven.

    Tirmidhi 3458

    Duas After Eating

Here is a good after meal dua among the duas after eating that can earn us Allah’s forgiveness. This powerful Dua emphasizes that we recognize that every provision we receive is solely by Allah’s mercy, without any might or power on our part. Just by reciting this Dua after eating, our Prophet (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) said that our past sins will be forgiven. Who wouldn’t want this?

#3 Dua After Eating / After Meal Dua

Narrated Abu Ayyub al-Ansari: When the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) ate or drank, he said:

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَ وَسَقَى وَسَوَّغَهُ وَجَعَلَ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا

“Al-hamdu lillah alladhi at’ama wa saqā wa sawwaghahu wa ja’ala lahu makhrajan.”

“Praise be to Allah Who has given food and drink and made it easy to swallow, and provided an exit for it.

    Sunan Abi Dawud, 3851

#4 Dua After Eating / After Meal Dua

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: I was in the house of Maymunah. The Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) accompanied by Khalid ibn al-Walid, entered. Two roasted long-tailed lizards (dabb) placed on the sticks were brought to him.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) spat. Khalid said: I think that you abominate it, Messenger of Allah. He said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) was brought milk, and he drank it. The Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and mercy be upon him) then said: When one of you eats food, he should say:

    اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

“Allahumma barik lana fihi wa at’imna khairan minhu.”

O Allah, bless us in it, and give us food (or nourishment) better than it.

When he is given milk to drink, he should say:

    اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ ‏.‏ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَىْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ إِلاَّ اللَّبَنُ ‏

“Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu, fa innahu laysa shay’un yujzi’u minat-ta’ami wash-sharabi illa al-laban.”

O Allah! bless us in it and give us more of it, for no food or drink satisfies like milk.

    Sunan Abi Dawud, 3730
