Assalaamu alaikum, brothers and sisters. When last did you sincerely make dua for your parents? You see, in Islam, your parents are not just part of your life story, they are a gateway to your Jannah. Allah didn’t just recommend kindness to parents. He placed it immediately after His own worship. That alone should make you reflect. For those who don’t know the recommended dua for parents, this guide will help you.

Know very well that one of the most powerful ways to honour them, whether they are alive or have returned to Allah, is through a sincere, consistent dua for parents. This act is not small. It is from the highest forms of righteousness and excellence toward parents. Even when you feel like you haven’t done enough for them… even when distance, death, or difficulty exists, your dua still reaches them.

Some scholars said that the supplication of a child for their parent is among the greatest of ongoing benefits that never ceases.

Why Making Dua for Parents Is So Powerful in Islam

Before we dive into the supplication, we must first understand the foundation upon which this act of worship stands. Why is it that saying the dua for parents carries such immense weight in the sight of Allah? Even dishonouring them is one of the greatest destructive sins in Islam.

This is because the right of parents is the greatest right after the right of Allah. And if you look at the Qur’an, you will find that Allah often pairs His command to worship Him with the command to be good to parents. This is to show you that just as Tawheed (monotheism) is the foundation of your relationship with Allah, Birr (kindness) to parents is the foundation of your relationship with humanity. Allah commanded us from the Quran…

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and to parents, good treatment…” In Surah Al-Isra (17:23–24),

Notice the order, from Tawheed, then to parents. Then Allah goes deeper, touching the heart:

    Dua for Parents

“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.’”

This is a command from our Lord, and then Allah teaches you the exact dua for parents. SubhanAllah. The One who created us is the One teaching us how to pray for them. Scholars reflected on this verse, that this dua combines humility, gratitude, and recognition of past favours, all of which are foundations of true righteousness. So saying the dua for parents is fulfilling the direct command from Allah.

Dua for Parents From The Quran

This is the first and foremost supplication that every Muslim should know, memorise, and recite regularly. Allah Himself taught us this short but greatest supplications. It is a dua revealed in the Qur’an, carrying within it mercy, humility, gratitude, and a recognition of everything your parents have done for you.

    “Rabbir hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira”

    Translation:

“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.” (Qur’an 17:24)

This dua is taken directly from Surah Al-Isra (17:24), the verse where Allah commands us to be dutiful to our parents. After instructing us to speak to them with honour, to lower the wing of humility, and to never utter a word of disrespect, Allah then teaches us what to say. He puts the words of supplication upon our tongues.

This single dua for parents is short in words… but vast in meaning. It is a dua that connects your past to your present. It forces you to remember who you were, weak, dependent, unable to care for yourself, and who stood by you through it all. Your parents. This supplication gathers all goodness, because when Allah has mercy on a person, He grants them forgiveness, ease, and entry into Paradise.

This is a great supplication that Allah Himself has taught the believers. It contains recognition of the parents’ favour and an acknowledgement that only Allah can repay them adequately. The servant asks Allah to have mercy on his parents just as they had mercy on him in his childhood. And this is one of the most comprehensive duas for parents, combining the rights of Allah and the rights of parents.

Dua for Parents and Entire Ummah (Forgiveness)

There is another powerful and deeply moving dua for parents to seek forgiveness for one’s parent.Dua for Parents

Rabbana ighfir lī wa li-wālidayya wa lil-mu’minīna yawma yaqūmul-ḥisāb

    Translation:

“Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the account is established.” (Qur’an 14:41)

This dua for parents is powerful because it connects to forgiveness and forgiveness is the gateway to everything. The one who is forgiven has attained every good, because sins are the barrier between the servant and Allah’s mercy. After forgiveness comes Allah’s mercy.  This reminds us that our duty to our parents extends beyond their earthly lives. We pray for their well-being while they are alive, and we pray for their salvation after their death too.

Dua for Parents and Guests (Forgiveness)

There is another good dua for parents found in the Qur’an. This is the supplication of Prophet Nuh. A man who called his people to Allah for 950 years… yet faced rejection, pain, and even hardship within his own family. And still when he turned to Allah, his heart expanded in mercy, not bitterness. And what did he ask for? Forgiveness. Mercy. Inclusion for his parents.

Rabbi ighfir lī wa li-wālidayya wa liman dakhala baytiya mu’minan wa lil-mu’minīna wal-mu’mināt, wa lā tazidi ẓ-ẓālimīna illā tabārā

    Translation:

“My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.” (Qur’an 71:28)

SubhanAllah… This is not just a simple dua for parents. It is a comprehensive supplication that reflects the heart of a true believer, one that carries concern for family, guests, and the entire Ummah. And when a person makes dua for all the believers, they receive the reward of supplicating for the entire ummah, and the angels pray for them in return

Seeking forgiveness is the oxygen of the soul. No servant can live without it. The prophets sought forgiveness, the righteous sought forgiveness, and the believers are commanded to seek forgiveness. It is not a sign of weakness. it is a sign of awareness. It shows that a person knows their standing before Allah and knows that they can never be self-sufficient.”

    Dua for Parents (Gratitude)

Among the most profound and heartfelt dua for parents in the Qur’an is found in Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:15). This supplication is not just about asking only, it is also about gratitude, awareness, and transformation.

    Dua for Parents

Rabbi awzi‘nī an ashkura ni‘mataka allatī an‘amta ‘alayya wa ‘alā wālidayya wa an a‘mala ṣāliḥan tarḍāhu wa aṣliḥ lī fī dhurriyyatī innī tubtu ilayka wa innī mina al-muslimīn

    Translation:

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness that You approve of, and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (Qur’an 46:15)

You cannot truly be grateful to Allah… until you recognize the role your parents played in your life. This supplication is among the most comprehensive for the one who wants to be dutiful to his parents and to raise righteous children. It combines the rights of parents with the rights of children, and it asks for the essential qualities of faith: gratitude, righteous action, repentance, and submission.”

Dua for Parents (Gratitude for blessings)

Among the beautiful and often overlooked forms of dua for parents is a supplication that indicae that no matter how successful you become, never forget making dua for your parents.

Rabbi awzi‘nī an ashkura ni‘mataka allatī an‘amta ‘alayya wa ‘alā wālidayya wa an a‘mala ṣāliḥan tarḍāhu wa adkhilnī biraḥmatika fī ‘ibādika aṣ-ṣāliḥīn

    Translation:

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness that You approve of, and admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.” (Qur’an 27:19)

Making this dua for parents reminds you that you are raised, supported, and sustained by Allah, then through your parents. Whoever does not see the blessings upon others as connected to his own has not truly understood gratitude. And when a person acknowledges the favors upon his parents, he is acknowledging his roots. My parents were given favors by Allah, and through them, I have received favors as well.’ This is gratitude.

When we make dua for parents, we should ask Allah to enable us to be grateful for the blessing of having parents. Many people in the world do not have parents, or have lost them, or have parents who are not present in their lives. If you have parents, whether alive or deceased, whether near or far you have a blessing that many do not have. And you should ask Allah to enable you to be grateful for that blessing.

For us, this means that when we make dua for parents, we should recognise the favors that Allah has bestowed upon them, the favor of life, the favor of health, the favor of Islam (if they are Muslim), the favor of being able to raise children. We should be grateful for these favors and ask Allah to increase them.

May Allah grant us the ability to honour our parents in this life. May He forgive our shortcomings in how we have treated them. May He have mercy on those who have passed away. And may He make us among the righteous children who continue to benefit their parents long after they have left this world. Aameen
