All praises are due to Allah, we praise Him and ask Him for His Peace and blessings upon our prophet Muhammad. Brothers and sisters in Islam, we are taught the importance of remembering Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) at every moment of our lives, and remembering Him after waking up from sleep is no exception. This is what will lead us to the dua after waking up from bed that we need to recite.
Let’s think about this, waking up from sleep is actually a new gift of life from Allah after taking our soul in the previous night and returning it to us again. Should we not even thank Allah for this? Of course yes. Sleep itself is described in the Quran as a form of temporary death, and waking up is a mercy and blessing from Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala). Allah says in the Quran:
“And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein that a specified term may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then[finally], He will inform you of what you used to do.” (Surah Al-An’am 6:60)
“It is Allah who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep. He keeps those [souls] for which He has ordained death and releases the rest for an appointed term. Indeed, in this are signs for a people who reflect.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:42)
The above verses are telling us that it is Allah’s mercy that He returned our soul back to us from sleep the following day and it ends with “in this are signs for people that reflect” that is people that think. If we think very well, we are going to see that having another to live on earth is worth really praising and thanking Allah for.
Why Is It Important to Recite Dua After Waking Up From Bed?
Starting your day with dhikr (remembrance of Allah) after waking up from bed sets a positive and purposeful manner for your day ahead. It is an act of worship that not only strengthens our connection with Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) but also fills our hearts with peace and gratitude.
Imagine when a king gives you a great gift. Would you not rush to thank him, to express your gratitude for his generosity? You will surely. What about Allah, the King of kings, the Most Generous, and the One who grants us the gift of life every single day? Reciting some dua after waking up from bed is another way of expressing this heartfelt gratitude.
Furthermore, there are some of these duas that serve as a reminder to us of our purpose and dependence on Allah’s mercy and guidance. They also serve as shields against the trials and tribulations we may face throughout the day. By invoking Allah’s name and seeking His protection through the dua after waking up from bed, we fortify ourselves against physical and spiritual harm. It was narrated in the sunnah that:
The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), said, “Shaytan ties three knots at the back of your head when you sleep, and he seals the place of each knot with ‘You have a long night ahead, so sleep.’ If you wake up and remember Allah, a knot is untied. If you do wudu, a knot is untied. If you pray, a knot is untied, and morning finds you lively and in good spirits, and if not, morning finds you in bad spirits and lazy.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 1142

Sahih Muslim 763l
Abdullah b. `Abbas reported: He spent (one night) in the house of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
He (the Holy Prophet) got up, brushed his teeth and performed ablution and said: “In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, there are indeed signs for people of understanding” (al-Qur’an, iii. 190), to the end of the Surah. He then stood up and prayed two rak`ahs, standing, bowing, and prostrating himself at length in them. Sahih Muslim 763l
By reciting the dua after waking up from bed, we can cultivate a deeper relationship with Allah by showing gratitude for another gift of life and ensure that our day starts with Allah’s protection, barakah, and peace. We should try an incorporate the Morning Adkhar after Fajr and Evening Adkhar into our daily lives too.
May Allah grant us the tawfiq (ability) to practice these teachings and make them a part of our daily lives. May He accept our duas and shower His blessings upon us. May He protect us from all harm and guide us on the straight path. Aameen.
