Quranic Bedtime Duas

1. Recite the following chapters: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas

Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ۞ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ۞ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ ۞

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem Qul huwa Allahu ahad Allahu assamad Lam yalid walam yoolad Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad

Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ ۞ مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ۞ وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ۞ وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ ۞ وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ۞

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem Qul a’udhu bi rabbil-falaq Min sharri ma khalaq Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab Wa min sharri an-naffathati fil-‘uqad Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad

Surah An-Nas (The Mankind)

 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ ۞ مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۞ إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۞ مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ ۞ ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۞ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ ۞

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem Qul a’udhu bi rabbin-nas Malikin-nas Ilahin-nas Min sharri alwaswasil khannas Alladhi yuwaswisu fee sudurin-nas Minal-jinnati wannas

Whenever the prophet is retiring to his bed every night, the Prophet (ﷺ ) would hold his palms together, spit (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle) in them, he will recite the last three chapters (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this three times.’

2. Ayat Al-Kursi (The Throne Verse)

ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌۭ وَلَا نَوْمٌۭ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Allahu la ilaha illa huwa Al-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wala nawm. Lahu ma fi as-samawati wa ma fi al-ard. Man tha alladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-ithnihi. Ya’lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum wa la yuhituna bishay’in min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’a. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma wa huwa Al-‘Aliyyul-Azim.

Dua To Say Before Sleeping

The prophet said: Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi from the beginning to the end —- Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-lHaiy-ul-Qaiyum—-.’ He further said to me, ‘(If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you, and no satan will come near you till morning.’

Sahih al-Bukhari, 2311

3. Recite The Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow)

 آمَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍۢ مِّن رُّسُلِهِۦ ۚ وَقَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا ٱكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَآ إِصْرًۭا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦ ۖ وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَآ ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَـٰنَا فَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Amana ar-rasulu bima onzila ilayhi min rabbihi wal-mu’minoon. Kullun amana bi’llahi wa mala’ikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi la nufarriqu bayna ahadin min rusulihi wa qaloo sami’na wa ata’na ghufranaka rabbana wa ilayka al-maseer. La yukallifu Allahu nafsan illa wus’aha laha ma kasabat wa ‘alayha ma iktasabat rabbana la tu’akhidhna in nasina aw akhta’na rabbana wala tahmil ‘alayna isran kama hamaltahu ‘ala allatheena min qablina rabbana wala tuhammilna ma la taqata lana bihi wa’fu anna waghfir lana warhamna anta mawlana fansurna ‘ala al-qawmi al-kaafireen.

Abu Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah in the night, it is enough for him.”

Jabir said, “The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), did not sleep until he had recited, ‘Alif-Lam-Mim. The Sending-down’ (32) and ‘Blessed is the One in whose hand the kingdom is’ (67).'”

#5 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ لاَ مَلْجَأَ وَلاَ مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ ‏”

Allāhumma innī aslamtu nafsī ilaika wa wajjahtu wajhī ilaika, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika wa alja’tu ẓahrī ilaika, lā malja’a, wa lā manjā minka illā ilaik. Āmantu bikitābikal-ladhī anzalta wa binabiyyikal-ladhī arsalt

O Allah, verily, I submit myself to You, and I turn my face to You, and I entrust my affair to You, hoping in You and fearing in You. And I lay myself down depending upon You, there is no refuge [nor escape] from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet (ﷺ) whom You have sent

Al-Bara’ bin `Azib narrated that: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: “Should I not teach you some words to say when you go to your bed, so if you died, you will die upon the Fitrah, and if you reach the morning, you will reach it in good?

Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3394

#6 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

رَبِّ بِكَ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا حَفِظْتَ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

‘Rabbi bika wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uhu, fa in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima hafizta bihi ‘ibadikaas-salihin

O Lord, by Your leave I lie down and by Your leave I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When anyone of you wants to go to bed, let him undo the edge of his Izar (waist wrap) and dust of his bed with it, for he does not know what came to it after him. Then let him lie down on his right side and say the dua.

#7 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبَّ الأَرْضِ وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى مُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا أَنْتَ الأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَىْءٌ وَأَنْتَ الآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَىْءٌ وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَىْءٌ وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَىْءٌ اقْضِ عَنِّي الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنِي مِنَ الْفَقْرِ

Allahumma Rabbas-samawati wa Rabbal-ardi, wa Rabba kulli shay’in, faliqal-habbi wan-nawa, munzilat-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Qur’anil-‘Azim. A’udhu bika min sharri kulli dabbatin Anta akhidhun binasiyatiha, Antal-Awwalu fa laysa qablaka shayun, wa Antal-Akhiru, fa laysa ba’daka shayun’, Antaz-zahiru, fa laysa fawqaka shayun’, wa antal-batinu fa laysa dunaka shay’, aqdi ‘annid-dayna waghnini minal-faqr

O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of all things, Cleaver of the seed and the kernel, Revealer of the Tawrah, the Injil and the Magnificent Qur’an, I seek refuge with You from the evil of every creature You seize by the forelock. You are the First and there is nothing before You; You are the Last and there is nothing after You; You are the Most High (Az-Zahir) and there is nothing above You, and You are the Most Near (Al-Batin) and there is nothing nearer than You. Settle my debt for me and spare me from poverty

When going to bed, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say this dua

Sunan Ibn Majah, 3873

#8 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ

Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawm tab’athu ‘ibadaka

O Allah, save me from Your punishment on the Day when You resurrect – or gather – Your slaves

Whenever the Prophet (saas) went to his bed, he would put his hand – meaning his right hand – beneath his cheek then say the dua.

Sunan Ibn Majah, 3877

#9 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ خَلَقْتَ نَفْسِي وَأَنْتَ تَوَفَّاهَا، لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحْياهَا، إِنْ أَحْيَيْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا، وَإِنْ أَمَتَّهَا فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ العَافِيَة

Allāhumma innaka khalaqta nafsī wa anta tawaffāhā, laka mamātuhā wa maḥyāhā, in aḥyaytahā faḥfaẓhā, wa in amattahā faghfir lahā. Allāhumma innī as’aluka ‘l-`āfiyah.

O Allah, You have created my soul and You take it back. Unto You is its death and its life. If You give it life then protect it, and if You cause it to die then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for strength.

Muslim 4/2083 and Ahmad 2/79.

#10 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live

With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live

Dua To Say Before Sleeping, bedtime dua

Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to go to bed, he would recite: “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live).”

Sahih al-Bukhari, 6324

#11 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Bismika Rabbi Wada`tu Janbi wa bika arfa’uhu, In amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ibadakas-salihin

O Lord, by Your leave I lie down and by Your leave I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When anyone of you go to bed, he should shake out his bed with the inside of his waist sheet, for he does not know what has come on to it after him, and then he should say this dua.

Sunan Ibn Majah, 3874

#12 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ. (ثَلاثا ً وَثَلاثِيْن) الحَمْدُ للهِ. (ثَلاثا ً وَثَلاثِيْن) اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ. (أَرْبَعا ً وَثَلاثِيْن)

Subhan Allah’ thirty-three times, ‘Al hamduli l-lah’ thirty three times, and Allahu Akbar’ thirty four times

The Prophet (ﷺ) said when you go to bed say ‘Subhan Allah’ thirty-three times, ‘Al hamduli l-lah’ thirty three times, and Allahu Akbar’ thirty four times, for that is better for you than having a servant.

Sahih al-Bukhari, 5361

#13 Dua To Say Before Sleeping

الْحَمْدَُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا فَكَمْ مِمَّنْ لاَ كَافِيَ لَهُ وَلاَ مُئْوِيَ  

Al-hamdu lillah-illadhi at’amana wa saqana, wa kafana wa awana, fakam mimman la kafiya lahu wa la mu’wiya

Praise is due to Allah Who fed us, provided us drink, sufficed us and provided us with shelter, for many a people there is none to suffice and none to provide shelter.

Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) went to his bed, he would say: “Al-hamdu lillah-illadhi at’amana wa saqana, wa kafana wa awana, fakam mimman la kafiya lahu wa la mu’wiya.

Benefits of Reciting Bedtime Duas Regularly

1. Strengthens your connection with Allah

One of the greatest benefits of reciting these bedtime duas is that it strengthens our bond with Allah. By turning to Him at the end of the day, you reaffirm your reliance on His mercy and protection.

2. Cultivates inner peace and ward off anxieties

Many of us now struggle with anxieties and stress, even as we lie down to rest. These dua to say before sleeping allows us to let go of worldly concerns and focus on Allah’s promises of His peace and protection. It also makes us to reflect on His mercy and blessings while reciting these bedtime duas, they bring tranquility to the heart, as Allah reminds us in the Qur’an.

“And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted.” (Surah Al-Furqan: 25:58)

3. Protection from harm as mentioned in Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that certain supplications serve as a shield against harm during sleep. For instance, he recommended reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before sleeping:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, it will suffice him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

These verses are many which serve as sources of immense protection, ensuring that one is safeguarded from spiritual and physical harm throughout the night. Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ would often recite the three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas) and then blow over his hands, wiping them over his body as a means of seeking Allah’s protection from every form of harm.
