All praise belongs to Allah and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad. In Islam, the concept of dua is fundamental. Dua can be a way to ask something from Allah and a way to seek His protection. The dua before entering the bathroom that you are going to learn today and some etiquettes around it are the duas for seeking refuge in Allah against the evils and harms of the devils.

As we all know that the bathroom is a place where we bathe and also relieve ourselves, it is regarded as a place of dirt, likewise our toilet. No matter how clean your bathroom is, it is considered a place of impurity where evil spirits (jinn) might reside. By invoking Allah’s name and seeking His protection, we are shielded from any harm and the evils of these Jinns that see us, and we are not see them.

We should know that this dua isn’t for the bathroom only, but generally when we want to enter any place where we relieve ourselves in like the toilet and any other place of dirt.

Is It Highly Recommended To Say The Dua Before Entering The Bathroom?

Yes, it is highly recommended to say this Dua before entering the bathroom due to some reasons that are for safety purposes. As we have already explained above that the Jinns and devils reside in the bathroom, toilet, and any other place of dirt, these Jinns are seeing us and we can’t see them. Thus, they can attack us anytime and at any moment. Then how do we protect ourselves from them since we can’t see them? Allah says:

“And if an evil whisper comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.” (Surah Al-A‘raf, 7:200)

    Dua Before Entering The Bathroom

Allah has already told us to seek refuge in Him against the evils of these Jinns. The act of reciting this dua before entering the bathroom is already rooted in the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) as Anas bin Malik reported that the Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) used to say this dua before entering the bathroom, lavatory or toilet (Sahih al-Bukhari 142).

What Is The Dua Before Entering The Bathroom?

This is the dua before entering the bathroom that is recommended for you to say as reported by Anas bin Malik: When the Messenger of Allaah (sal lAllahu alayhi wa sallam) entered the toilet, he used to say (before entering):

    اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أَعـوذُ بِـكَ مِـنَ الْخُـبْثِ وَالْخَبائِث

    Allāhumma ‘innī ‘a`ūdhu bika minal-khubthi walkhabā’ith.

O Allah, I seek protection in You from the male and female Jinns (devils).

In another narration, Zaid bin Arqam said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘These Hushush (waste areas) are visited (by devils), so when any of you enters, let him say:

    اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أَعـوذُ بِـكَ مِـنَ الْخُـبْثِ وَالْخَبائِث

‘Allahumma inni a`udhu bika minal-khubthi wal-khaba’ith (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from male and female devils).'”

The addition of Bismillah at its beginning was reported by Said bin Mansur. See Fathul-Bari 1/244. This is in Hisn al-Muslim, 10 with reference to Al-Bukhari 1/45, Muslim 1/283

    Some Bathroom Etiquettes in Islam

Islamic teachings encompass every aspect of life, including the etiquette of using the bathroom. Let’s learn some of them now:

    • Entering with the left foot and exiting with the right: The Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) has guided us on how we should enter and exit the bathroom. It is recommended to enter the bathroom with the left foot and exit with the right. While entering, we should say the dua before entering the bathroom, along with it.
    • Ensuring adequate privacy: Islam places a high value on modesty and privacy. We should ensure that the door is closed properly.
    • Talking, eating, or engaging in unnecessary actions is prohibited: The bathroom is a place for attending to personal needs and maintaining hygiene, not for socializing or engaging in other activities. Talking, eating, or performing unnecessary actions in the bathroom is discouraged except in case of necessity when someone might needs our help and we need to reply to that person.
    • Carefully removing all impurities after answering the call of nature: It is important for us to clean our bodies thoroughly after urinating or defecating.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Most of the torment in the grave is due to carelessness with urine.”  (Tirmidhi 348)

We are going to see that the dua before entering the toilet is very beneficial as it keeps us away from the evil of the devils and Jinns. Therefore, we should adhere to this beautiful sunnah anytime we want to enter the bathroom, toilet, or any other filthy place.
