      • Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

Assalaamu alaikum, my brothers and sisters in Islam. We can’t really imagine how blessed we are as Muslims. We are in the month of Ramadan, where there is a blessed night called Laylatul Qadr in it, which is better than a thousand months. Our Prophet ﷺ told us a lot about this night and the best dua for Laylatul Qadr. A night where the gates of mercy are wide open, sins are forgiven, and duas are answered.

Imagine standing before Allah on this night when duas are accepted, sins are forgiven, and the mercy of Allah descends like never before. This is a golden opportunity that comes once a year, and no Muslim should miss it. This is the recommended Tahajjud Muslims should engage in rather than doing the New Year Festival Night or the Cross-Over Night, which is totally haram (prohibited).

What is Laylatul Qadr and Why is it So Special?

Laylatul Qadr (Night of decree) is the night in which the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as guidance for humanity. Allah mentions in Surah Al-Qadr:

    Advertisements

Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Quran] down during the Night of Decree. (Q 97:1)

It is a night filled with peace and divine decrees. The angels, including Jibreel (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ), descend to witness the worship of believers. Allah declares:

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. (Q 97:3-5)

This night, hidden in the last ten nights of Ramadan, holds unimaginable rewards. It is a time when Allah accepts duas easily, forgives sins, and His mercy descends like never before. Our Prophet ﷺ taught us the best dua for Laylatul Qadr that we should keep saying in the last ten days of Ramadan. There are other powerful duas for Laylatul Qadr recommended to say for seeking forgiveness, Allah’s mercy and blessings.

Making dua on this night is so crucial because our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

He who observed prayer on Lailat-ul- Qadr with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven.   (Sahih Muslim, 760 a)

As we know that after forgiveness comes Allah’s mercy and blessings, who wouldn’t want this? In shaa Allah, we are going to mention the best dua for Laylatul Qadr taught by our Prophet ﷺ in this article today, along with powerful duas for Laylatul Qadr recommended to recite during the last ten days of Ramadan.

What is the Best Dua for Laylatul Qadr?

The best dua for Laylatul Qadr is the most powerful dua taught by our Prophet ﷺ when our mother A’isha asked him about the dua to recite if she coincides with Laylatul Qadr. The Prophet ﷺ told her to say “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni”.

Best Dua for Laylatul Qadr, Powerful Duas for Laylatul Qadr

Best dua for Laylatul Qadr in Arabic

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Best dua for Laylatul Qadr in Translietration

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni

Meaning of the best dua for Laylatul Qadr

“O Allah, You are Pardoning, and You love pardon, so pardon me.”

This dua was taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself, as narrated by Aisha (رضي الله عنها). She reported that she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ :  “O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say?” He replied:
“Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni).” (Sunan Tirmidhi, 3513)

    Why is this Dua special?

The reason is that this dua is centered on seeking Allah’s forgiveness. This dua directly appeals to Allah’s attribute of being Al-‘Afuww — the One who pardons and erases sins completely. We are asking Him to forgive and erase our sins. The question is, after we are cleansed of our sins, what remains?

What remains is Allah’s mercy and blessings. That’s why He used to describe Himself as “Al-Ghafur Ar Raheem,” meaning that after He forgives someone, He showers His mercy upon the person and blesses him after that.  Another evidence for this is when Prophet Nuh (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) was telling his people to seek Allah’s forgiveness only for their sins, saying:

And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.  (Q 71:10-12)

Prophet Nuh (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) was telling them, after they seek Allah’s forgiveness and He forgives them, Allah will automatically bless them with abundant rain and give them the wealth they need and children. This is how merciful Allah is, He blesses His salve after He forgives him directly.

    رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

    4. Dua for Protection from Hellfire

    رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا
Rabbana isrif ‘anna ‘adhaba jahannam, inna ‘adhabaha kana gharama.
“Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering.” (Quran 25:65)

    5. Dua for Removing Hardship and Anxiety

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ
    Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan.
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief.” (Bukhari 6369)

    6. Dua for Acceptance of Worship

    رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka antas-Sami’ul ‘Aleem.
“Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Quran 2:127)

Note: All these powerful duas for Laylatul Qadr are not specifically mentioned by our Prophet for Laylatul Qadr, they are just recommended duas that we say in asking for our wants. They are not restricted to these 6, you can also add to it based on your wants. You can supplicate in your mother’s language too in asking for anything you want from Allah in these nights.

Best Dua for Laylatul Qadr, Powerful Duas for Laylatul Qadr

    1. Observing and praying Qiyam-ul-Layl (Tahajjud) very well  in the nights
    2. Recite and reflect on the Quran
    3. Increase in more dhikr and Istighfar
    4. Give Sadaqah (Charity)
    5. Make personal Duas to ask Allah for your need

Common Mistakes to Avoid in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

    1. Thinking it’s only on the 27th Night: Our Prophet ﷺ said: “Search for Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Bukhari 2017, Muslim 1169). It could be on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night, so worship every night to avoid missing it!
    2. Sleeping through the last 10 Nights: Many Muslims stay up late watching TV or scrolling through social media but fail to pray, make dua, or read the Quran. This is a wasted opportunity!
    3. Not making Dua with sincerity and focus: Some people make Dua without certainty and rush through them without focusing on it. The Prophet ﷺ said: Call upon Allah with certainty that He will answer you. Know that Allah will not answer the supplication of an unmindful and distracted heart.” (Tirmidhi 3479)
    4. Engaging in distractions like social media, entertainment, etc, Many people waste time scrolling through social media, watching TV, or chatting with friends when they could be making dhikr, praying, or reciting the Quran.

Laylatul Qadr is the greatest night of the year, and missing its rewards would be a huge loss. By praying Qiyamul layl, making dua, giving charity, reading the Quran, and avoiding distractions, we can maximize our rewards and draw closer to Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to make the most of this blessed night and accept our duas. Aameen!
