    • What is the dua for congratulating new parents for new born?
    • Why Islamic Dua For A New Born baby is recommended?
      • Can we say another dua?

My beloved brothers and sisters in Islam, there is no feeling in this world that quite compares to holding your newborn child for the first time after your wife’s delivery. It is a moment where time stands still, and our hearts are overwhelmed with a love so profound that we instantly understand the depth of Allah’s mercy. Today, we will learn the recommended Islamic Dua for a new born baby and the surrounding practices.

When Allah blesses us with this precious gift, it is not just a moment of joy;  It is a moment of great responsibility. He is entrusting us with an amanah (a trust). This child is a trust from Allah, entrusted to you for nurturing, teaching, protecting, and guiding toward Jannah. That alone should humble every parent. Allah says in the Quran:

“To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He grants to whom He wills female children, and He grants to whom He wills male children.”   (Surah Ash-Shura 42:49)

This means that Allah granting you a child is not an accident. Not a coincidence. It is a divine gift and was written long before you ever held that baby. It’s now your responsibility to cater for the child spiritually in deen and worldly affairs. And because of this, making dua is one of the great things to do.

What is the dua for congratulating new parents for new born?

Islam teaches us to turn every moment of happiness into an opportunity to remember Allah and to pray for one another. So when we go to visit the new parents, what should we say to the mother and father? How do we congratulate them in a way that is pleasing to Allah and follows the blessed path of our Prophet (ﷺ)?

There is a dua narrated from the companions on the dua for congratulating new parents for new born when we visit the new parents. When someone was congratulated upon the birth of a child, the Companions would say:

dua for congratulating new parents for new born, Islamic Dua For A New Born baby

    Transliteration:
Barakallahu laka fil-mawhubi laka, wa shakartal-Wahib, wa balagha ashuddahu, wa ruziqta birrah.

    Meaning:
“May Allah bless you in the gift He has granted you, may you give thanks to the Giver, may the child reach maturity, and may you be granted righteousness from them.”

This is the widely accepted and practised dua for congratulating new parents for new born among the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah. This narration is reported by Imam al-Bayhaqi in Shu‘ab al-Iman, and although its chain has some weakness, the scholars such as Imam an-Nawawi and others considered its meaning sound and permissible to act upon because it aligns perfectly with Islamic principles.

Scholars of Islam mentioned that there is no specific compulsory wording established directly from the Prophet ﷺ, but making dua for blessing, righteousness, and gratitude is from the Sunnah in meaning and practice.

The second form of congratulations comes to us from the generation after the companions, the Tabi’in. It is narrated from two of the greatest Imams of that time: Hasan al-Basri and Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani (may Allah have mercy on them both) .

جعله الله مباركاً عليك وعلى أمة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم

Transliteration: Ja’alahu Allahu mubaarakan ‘alayka wa ‘ala ummati Muhammadin sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

Translation: “May Allah make him (the child) a blessing for you and a blessing for the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ).”

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal praised Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani greatly, calling him one of the best of the Tabi’in. This dua is incredibly deep. It expands the horizon of our hope for the child. We are not just praying that the child is good to his parents, but that he becomes a source of benefit for the entire Muslim nation.

We are asking Allah to make this child a future scholar, a righteous leader, a doctor who serves the community, or a loving parent who raises righteous children. This dua recognises that every righteous soul is a building block for the strength of the Ummah.

Why Islamic Dua For A New Born baby is recommended?

Whenever a new baby is born, Shaytan is present from the beginning. Our Prophet ﷺ said:

“When any human being is born, Shaytan touches him at both sides of the body with his two fingers, except for ‘Isa ibn Maryam and his mother.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

That is why some scholars emphasised that turning immediately to dua and Sunnah practices protects the newborn from harm, envy, and evil whispers. You are not just welcoming a child into the world. You are placing that child under the protection of Allah. And this is why the Islamic Dua For A New Born baby is not an optional culture but recomended islamically. There’s nothing wrong in saying good words in the form of a dua, like saying:

O Allah, make him (the child) dutiful, pious, and rightly guided, and cause him to grow up in Islam with a good upbringing

Another dua that is recommended by the parents to always make for the new born is the one narrated from our Prophet ﷺ in seeking Allah’s protection for children. This Islamic dua for a new born baby is highly recommended to keep saying for children till they grow up to be able to say it personally. This is the dua that our Prophet ﷺ used to say for his grandsons Hassan and Hussein. This dua for children’s protection from harm is the one below…

dua for congratulating new parents for new born, Islamic Dua For A New Born baby

Dua to protect your children from harm in  Transliteration:
Uʿīdhukā bi-kalimātillāhi al-tāmmati min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynin lāmmah

Dua to protect your children from harm in English:
I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye that harms.

    Can we say another dua?

Yes. Scholars of Islam explain that there is no strictly fixed wording required. Any dua asking Allah to bless the child and parents is permissible. For example, you may say:

    • “May Allah make him/her among the righteous.”
    • “May Allah protect this child from Shaytan.”
    • “May Allah make this child a means of goodness for the Ummah.”

What matters is sincerity and accordance with Islamic principles. My dear brothers and sisters, when Allah places a newborn in your arms, He is not only giving you joy, He is writing a chapter of responsibility in your life. A child is laughter in your home, yes. But more than that, a child is a test, a trust, and potentially your ongoing charity until the Day of Judgment.

The Islamic Dua For A New Born baby is not just a cultural phrase. It is a means of asking Allah for protection, barakah. And the dua for congratulating new parents for new born is a reminder that raising a child is not possible without Allah’s help. Some scholars emphasised that hearts are nurtured upon what they first hear and build on. So if the beginning is remembrance of Allah, the path ahead is more likely to remain firm.

May Allah bless every home that awaits a child. May He bless every mother who carries a child with patience and faith. May He bless every father who works to provide for his family with halal earnings. May He bless every child born into the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) and make them a source of goodness, guidance, and light.
