    • Final Thoughts on Dua for Forgiveness

Dua for forgiveness is a profound act of worship in Islam, and the Quran and Hadith provide us with numerous supplications to help us in this spiritual endeavor.

First and foremost, we should know that Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has made it clear through the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that He desires us to seek His forgiveness. This act of seeking forgiveness is not just a recommendation but a command from Allah Himself.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'”  (Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious said: ‘O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.'”  (Sahih Muslim)

Abu Hurairah narrated that: Allah’s Messenger (S) said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, descends to the earth’s heaven every night when the first third of the night has passed.

He, Allah says: I am the Sovereign. Is there any who calls upon Me so that I may respond to him? Is there any who asks of Me that I may give him? Is there any who seeks forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?’ He continues in that until the illumination of Al-Fajr (Tirimidhi)

This act of turning to Allah in repentance and seeking His mercy is fundamental to our faith and spiritual growth which leads to closeness to Allah, and ultimate salvation. Allah repeatedly encourages us His servants to turn to Him in repentance and seek His forgiveness.

After leaving any gathering, it is recommended to recite the following Dua. This Dua is popularly known as Kaffaratul Majlis, a supplication recited at the end of a gathering to expiate for any unintended sins or idle talk during the gathering.

It’s a comprehensive supplication that involves constant acknowledgment of Allah’s greatness, expatiation of one’s bad deeds or talks, and a sincere effort to seek forgiveness and improve oneself.

“Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu alla ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka” (Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is no deity but You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You).

Meaning: “Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness, and I repent to You”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his:

‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You, (Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik)’ whatever occurred in that sitting would be forgiven to him.”  (Jami` at-Tirmidhi)

Final Thoughts on Dua for Forgiveness

Seeking forgiveness is a journey that requires sincerity, humility, and a genuine urge to amend our ways. Allah (Subuhanahu wa taa’la) is the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful, and He loves those who turn to Him in repentance. As He says in Surah Az-Zumar 39:53:

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'”

Let us strive to incorporate these dua for forgiveness as a regular part of our worship and daily routines, constantly seeking Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. May Allah (Subuhanahu wa taa’la) accept our supplications, forgive our sins, and guide us on the straight path. Aameen.
