In this age of countless distractions, doubts, and trials, one of the greatest blessings someone as a believer can ever have is the right guidance. Every day, we are engaged in a lot of activities, some leading us closer to Allah, and others pulling us away. In moments like these, the heart becomes the battlefield and that is where the dua for guidance becomes the believer’s lifeline.
SubhanAllah, even our Prophet ﷺ, the most guided of all mankind, would often raise his hands and supplicate for guidance and steadfastness. He, who received direct revelation, feared that his heart could turn if Allah did not keep it firm. This should humble every one of us. If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself needed Allah’s help to stay firm, how much more do we need it?
In one of the most authentic narrations, the Prophet ﷺ used to make a heartfelt dua that captures the essence of a believer’s dependency on Allah:
“O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”
— (Tirmidhi, 2140)
This short, powerful Islamic dua for guidance is a reminder that the heart is not a stable entity. It signifies that our emotions, convictions, and intentions can shift, and without Allah’s mercy, none of us can remain steadfast and guided.
As Muslims, we need to understand that guidance is from Allah. That’s why we need to say the recommended dua for guidance in Islam. We got to know this from the narration of our mother, Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), when Shahr bin Hawshab asked her, ‘O Mother of the Believers! What was the supplication that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said most frequently when he was with you?”
She said: ‘The supplication he (ﷺ) said most frequently was: “O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion
She said: ‘So I said: “O Messenger of Allah, why do you supplicate so frequently: ‘O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.’ He said: ‘O Umm Salamah! Verily, there is no human being except that his heart is between Two Fingers of the Fingers of Allah, so whomsoever He wills He makes steadfast, and whomever He wills He causes to deviate.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3522)
My dear brothers and sisters, if you have ever felt lost, confused, not yet practising some of the things commanded by Allah or His Prophet (ﷺ), or struggling to stay firm on the straight path, know that you are not alone. This is a human experience, and Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has already provided us with the ultimate cure.
The most authentic and powerful dua for guidance is not a hidden secret. It is in what we recite daily as Muslims in Surah Al-Faatiha, the chapter we recite at least 17 times a day in our Salah. This means that it is every day that we say the dua for guidance, which is “Ihdinas-Siratal-Mustaqeem”, “Guide us to the Straight Path, Allah.” There are a lot of recommended dua for guidance which we are going to mention below now…
No.1 dua for guidance

O Allah! Inspire in me guidance and deliver me from the evils within myself
[At-Tirmidhi].[Riyadh as Saliheen Book 17 Hadith 1487]
No.2 dua for guidance

This is the dua for guidance or we also call it dua for steadfastness that our Prophet taught Ali.
No.3 dua for guidance

This is the Prophet’s (ﷺ) dua for guidance that he supplicated in favor of Mu‘āwiyah ibn Abi Sufyān that Allah should make him a guide to good, make him a guided person, and guide people through him. [Authentic hadith] – [Narrated by At-Termedhy – Narrated by Ahmad 1197]
No.4 dua for guidance

“O Allah, I ask You for guidance, righteousness, abstinence, and independence.”
(Sahih Muslim 2721)
No.5 dua for steadfatsness after guidance
Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba’da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah, innaka antal-Wahhab.
“Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. (Surah Ali ‘Imran – 8)
This is a Quranic dua for steadfastness after being guided upon the truth.
No.6 dua for steadfatsness after guidance
يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ
Yā Muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ‘alā dīnik.
“O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion!”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2140)
My dear brothers and sisters, one of the greatest truths a believer must never forget is that no one is safe from misguidance except by the mercy of Allah. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have, how strong your faith seems, or how many years you’ve been praying. The heart is fragile, and faith is a gift that must be protected with constant supplication.
Human beings are forgetful by nature. One day, our hearts overflow with sincerity, and the next, they are distracted by the glitter of the dunya. We are exposed to whispers, temptations, and trials that can make even the strongest believer tremble. That is why we must never feel secure from misguidance. Our Prophet ﷺ, the most guided of all mankind constantly sought Allah’s help to remain firm. In an authentic hadith, he said:
“The hearts of all the sons of Adam are between two fingers of the Most Merciful; He turns them as He wills.” (Sahih Muslim, 2654)
This hadith reveals that the control of our hearts is not in our hands. The heart is like a leaf blown by the wind unless Allah holds it firm. That is why the Prophet ﷺ, despite being chosen, purified, and divinely guided, would frequently say:
“O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”
SubhanAllah, If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself could fear this for his heart, then what about us living in an age of endless distractions, fitnah, and moral confusion? This is why we need to increase in saying the dua for guidance and steadfastnes. Any of the dua for guidance can be recited during the best moments prayers are easily accepted by Allah like…
- During sujood (prostration), when you are closest to Allah.
- In the last third of the night, when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks, “Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness or guidance so I may grant it to him?”
- Between the adhan and iqamah, a time when supplications are not rejected.
- During times of distress, for the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah responds most to the broken-hearted.
- And many more…
And may Allah, the Turner of hearts, keep our hearts steadfast upon His religion, guide us to the straight path, protect us from deviation, and grant us death upon La ilaha illa Allah. Aameen
